Momotaro Tancho | 47 cm SKU: OGT-TAN-MOM-U-47-2601-023

A classical Momotaro Tancho — and a textbook example of one of the most culturally significant koi varieties in Japan. The Tancho mark is exceptionally well-shaped: nearly perfectly round, deeply saturated red, centered on the forehead with disciplined edges and no bleeding into surrounding scales. The body is pure clean Shiroji throughout, with no patches or blemishes anywhere — which is what defines a Tancho and what separates a serious specimen from a near-miss.
Tancho is named for the Tancho crane, the red-crowned bird that holds sacred status in Japanese culture, and the variety’s visual echo of the Japanese flag — single red circle on a pure white field — gives it a directness of appeal that few other varieties can match. Even buyers who don’t follow koi grading respond to a clean Tancho immediately.
The variety lives or dies on two things: the quality of the head mark, and the cleanness of the body white. Both are exceptional on this fish. The Hi has the depth and edge discipline that Momotaro’s Kohaku bloodlines are known for, applied to the single head mark with the same standard. The Shiroji is exceptionally bright, even, and unblemished — which is harder to achieve in koi than it sounds, and impossible to fake with photography. Body shape is straight with good shoulders and clean conformation.
Momotaro Koi Farm is one of the most respected names in Niigata, and their Tancho work draws on the same disciplined breeding that produces their Kohaku. At 47cm, this is a presence fish — large enough to read clearly in any pond, with significant continued development ahead.
