Goshiki (goh-SHKEE) means “five colours”. The variety layers a Kohaku-style red pattern over a white base netted with blue-black reticulation, and the interplay of those layers creates everything from bright, high-contrast fish to dark, dramatic ones. Gin Goshiki add a metallic silver sheen over the same pattern.

A quality Goshiki shows deep, glossy Hi that sits cleanly on top of the reticulation, an even net pattern that doesn’t invade the red, and a bright shiroji base between the markings. Goshiki are also famous for changing as they grow – the sumi netting typically intensifies with age and cooler water, so a young fish often darkens into something far more dramatic. Buying Goshiki is buying potential, which is why bloodline matters more here than in most varieties.
