Doitsu (DOYT-soo) is not a colour variety but a scale type: these koi are either fully scaleless (“leather” koi) or carry a single neat row of enlarged mirror scales along the dorsal line and lateral lines.

The trait traces back to German mirror carp crossed into Japanese koi lines in the early 1900s – doitsu is simply the Japanese word for German. Almost any variety can come in Doitsu form, so this category spans Doitsu Kohaku, Doitsu Sanke, Doitsu Goshiki and more.

The appeal is clarity. Without a scale pattern breaking up the surface, colours appear sharper and pattern edges almost painted on – a well-marked Doitsu koi looks striking even at a distance. When judging one, look for clean, evenly spaced dorsal scales with no stray scattered scales on the body, and skin with a smooth, lacquered finish.
