A Momotaro Maruten Kohaku — and a textbook example of one of the more sought-after Kohaku pattern types. Maruten is defined by a completely isolated round Hi mark on the head, with the body carrying its own separate Hi pattern below. The discipline required is real: the head Hi has to be truly isolated, with no Hi bleeding into the neck or shoulder area to connect it to the body pattern. Many fish marketed as Maruten fail this test on close inspection. This one passes cleanly.
The head mark is exceptionally well-shaped — round, deeply saturated, centered, with disciplined edges. The body Hi is laid out as a strong shoulder/back plate with a clean break and another plate through the mid-body, with that signature Momotaro depth of red — even tone, no patchiness, clean break edges where it meets the white. The Shiroji is exceptionally bright and unblemished, particularly through the neck area where it has to remain pure to maintain the Maruten classification.
Body shape is straight with good shoulders and a clean tail tube. Momotaro Koi Farm is one of the most respected names in Niigata, with a Kohaku bloodline refined across decades for exactly the kind of pattern discipline visible here. At 46cm, this fish has significant continued development ahead — Maruten patterns in particular tend to stabilise as the fish matures, with the head mark and body pattern settling into their final relationship over the next 2–3 years.
