A female Momotaro Sanke at an early stage of Sumi development. The Hi (red) is the dominant visible feature — bright, saturated, and laid out in a strong two-plate pattern with a shoulder mark and a substantial mid-body plate that wraps around toward the head. The Hi has that signature Momotaro depth of red, with even tone and clean break edges where it meets the white. The Shiroji is exceptionally bright and unblemished.
The Sumi (black) is present but still developing — a few small, fine markings visible across the back and flanks. Sumi behaviour in Sanke is notoriously slow to settle: in well-bred bloodlines like Momotaro’s, the Sumi can continue to surface, fade, and resurface for 3–4 years before reaching its final form. What’s visible now is the beginning, not the final character. For collectors who appreciate the developmental journey of a young Sanke, this is exactly the kind of fish that rewards patience — the underlying Hi quality and skin clarity are already in place, and the Sumi has room to develop into something distinctive over time.
The body is straight with good shoulders and clean conformation. At 47cm she’s a strong size for the price point, with significant pattern development still ahead. Momotaro Koi Farm is one of the most respected names in Niigata, and growing on a young Sanke from this bloodline is one of the more rewarding projects in the hobby.
