A female Hi Utsuri imported from Otsuka in January 2026 — and a striking fish at 58cm, which is a meaningful size for this variety. Hi Utsuri is one of the boldest koi in the hobby, and this one shows exactly why collectors are drawn to it: deep, lacquered black Sumi as the base, broken by warm orange-red Hi in a dynamic, asymmetric pattern that wraps the body from head to tail. The Sumi has the wet, polished finish that signals well-developed black, and the Hi is bright and saturated with no patchiness.
The menware (the black pattern across the head) is well-defined, and the pattern carries strong contrast all the way down the body without losing intensity at the tail — a common weakness in lesser Utsuri. The body is full and well-proportioned with strong shoulders and clean tail tube.
Hi Utsuri sits within the Utsurimono classification, and the variety lives or dies on the quality of the Sumi. Otsuka is one of the Niigata breeders with serious depth in Kawarimono and Utsurimono bloodlines, and the Sumi development on this fish is the bloodline doing its job.
